Welcome to my Fitness Nurse Blog!

I'm so happy that you decided to take the time to explore my website. I am excited to be on this journey to health and wellness with you! My goal of this blog is to help patients with diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancer,  congestive heart failure or obesity to no longer be controlled by their illnesses, but rather to be able to live full and vibrant lives. It is time to recognize that changing health behaviors is difficult and requires a long-term commitment and coaching.

Fitness nursing is a new concept for many, but I feel it is an integral component of the care continuum that patients have been missing out on! Let me tell you a little more about what fitness nursing is. "Fitness nurses are inspired leaders practicing at the forefront of an integrative healthcare model that understands the interconnected and multidimensional aspects that influence health and wellbeing throughout the life cycle. The Fitness Nurse movement recognizes and addresses the resiliency and capacity of individuals and communities to adapt healthier lifestyles with the support, guidance, expertise, and  advocacy of a fitness nurse".

The United States healthcare system is undergoing a transformation from a disease-focused healthcare system to one focused on wellness, health promotion, and disease prevention. Nursing, recognizing the importance of its emerging role, is claiming its rightful position in this major shift from disease care to disease prevention, and improved health and enhanced wellbeing. The change process is grounded in an awareness that effective change evolves from within before it can be manifested and maintained externally.  The American Holistic Nurse Credentialing Corporation describes fitness nurses as "A professional fitness nurse works with the whole person using principles and modalities that integrate the bio-psycho-social-spiritual-cultural-environmental dimensions towards human flourishing. Professional fitness nursing is a skilled, purposeful, results-oriented, and structured relationship-centered interaction with clients provided by a registered nurse for the purpose of promoting achievement of client goals."

Phase 2 Running Training Block

Hard to believe this week will mark the end of the 16 week 'Distance Phase' of this training block in preparation for the Big Foot 200 race! With the holidays thrown into the mix I will have to admit that there have been some challenges. As with any goal, there have been some ups and downs and I tried my very best to both stay consistent yet also show myself some grace when life presented roadblocks. I will say running 50-100 mile weeks made this training block feel at times like a full time job! I spent a lot of hours out there on the trails! The colder weather set in mid November, this mixed with snowy slippery trails resulted in slower mile times and required additional time training. But the goal is to adapt and overcome. Training for a challenge this big certainly offers up its fair share of life lessons! Overall I am most proud of making my mile goals and I feel that I did do a good job in being creative with my training time and balancing my time with family through the holiday season.

As a Wellness and fitness coach I have my clients work on goal setting. I am a firm believer that health involves so much more than just your physical state. Winter Weather and Chronic Pain

A fresh covering of snow has fallen here in Wisconsin. As much as I love this time of year, it does present some additional challenges managing my Lupus. Many people with chronic pain conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, and various autoimmune disorders, often experience flare-ups during colder weather. Today I wanted to discuss the science behind weather and pain as well as share some of tips I use to help manage my pain throughout the winter months.

What Have you Got to Lose?

It's easy to see the benefit in making healthy changes in our lives! More energy, better sleep, less pain with movement, healthier joints, clearer sense of purpose. What's often harder is to look honestly at the reasons we choose to stay the same and not make any changes. There are often important reasons to acknowledge for keeping the status quo. For myself, its often been fear standing in my way. Fear of the unknown mostly.  Change can bring discomfort, as well as increase wellbeing. Change may alter significant relationships, as well as open the door for new ones to form. Change can bring loss, not just gain. And we are rarely comfortable feeling the pain of loss...let alone talking about it. If you are feeling stuck and unable to move forward, it might be helpful to look at something called 'decisional balance"  this tool assesses the pros & cons of making a change verse keeping the status quo. I used this technique with a client this morning when setting up goals and assessing her readiness to make the necessary changes to begin a wellness journey.
