Join Lion's Den Fitness this week for the "Eat the Rainbow Challenge!"
With Spring in the air, and the farmer's markets opening up it's the perfect time to add more color to our diets! This week, the "Eat the Rainbow Challenge" will get you to incorporate the colors of the rainbow into your diet every day. See how many different foods you can incorporate by the end of the week! Try a new recipe, add in some tea, let your kids pick a new fruit at the grocery store or the farmer's market! Make it fun and you just might feel good at the same time!
With all of my clients, we dive into what daily nutrition looks like for them. I believe that nutrition is not low fat, It's not low calorie. It's not the latest fad diet, as a fitness nurse I try to instill a Lifelong positive relationship with food resulting in lasting health benefits! Nutrition is about nourishing your body with real, whole foods so that you are satisfied and energized to live life to the fullest. The first few weeks I find it easiest to make simple but effective changes. "Eat the Rainbow" concept is one way to start adding healthy food selections without feeling overwhelmed. I have found that this approach helps people get excited about making healthier food choices, and we start to build the foundation, and learning about the benefits of a healthier diet. I love the quote "You gotta nourish in order to flourish!"
Diversity in our diets is one key to a healthy gut microbiome and overall health. Different foods offer different phytonutrients that are key to reducing inflammation, oxidation and the negative effects of aging. By incorporating a wide array of colors in the diet, you can ensure you are getting a full spectrum of antioxidants and phytonutrients to promote health and longevity.
Eating what is in season can be a great way to mix up what produce you are consuming. Another great way is to pick one new fruit or vegetable each week to incorporate into the diet and promote diversity. And as far as phytonutrients go, don't forget about spices and teas which have powerful antioxidants and beneficial properties!
Over the next few days I will be diving more into the different powerful antioxidants and phytonutrients found in plants. I will be sharing some recipes and gardening tips on how to grow some fresh vegetable's in your own backyard!
Here's to a week full of colorful healthy eating!
Much love,
Katie
