What is a Certified Fitness Nurse?
A Certified Fitness Nurse is a licensed registered nurse who specializes in combining nursing practices and medical knowledge with personal fitness training. Typically work with clients whose Physician and or Nurse Practitioner recommended exercise as part of their care plan. Some medical conditions can make fitness challenging. Fitness nursing can help these individuals manage their health issues while creating and maintaining fitness routines. Fitness nurse practice extends beyond traditional nursing practices to provide tailored guidance, support and empowerment to each client.
What type of clients do you work with?
A fitness nurse will work with a variety of clients. Some clients may want to improve or manage a particular health condition, prevent disease or maintain overall wellness.
-Work to heal the most reversible diseases such as metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes and inflammation through exercise, movement and nursing assessment.
-People with Cardiac health conditions: Patients who recently had a heart attack or suffer from underlying heart conditions often benefit from fitness nursing. A fitness nurse can help cardiac patients exercise safely while keeping track of their heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen and respiration levels, as well as working to keep client in a safe exertion zone. Fitness nurses have clinical knowledge of cardiac medications, how they are processed in the body, uses, side effects, and clinical impact on heart rates, blood pressures, and energy levels.
-Cancer patients: Exercise has been shown to help elevate mood, reduce anxiety, improve sleep, boost energy and reduce symptoms of treatment- related side effects, such as neuropathy and lymphedema. Fitness nurses have both a well rounded education and hands on experience working with these special clients. Ensuring proper rest periods, safe and tailored exercises depending on treatments and incision locations, monitor vital signs, and pain assessments. Often work one-on-one limiting risk of infection, and a private encouraging environment.
